  • Slow Growth Cassette Tape (Lost Sound Tapes #95)
    Cassette + Digital Album

    From Lostsoundtapes.com:
“Slow Growth” is ten songs about growth, change, love, recovery and resilience. Tenney intends to use her layered vocals and instruments to create mysterious, haunting harmonies and soundscapes inspired by environmental and political landscapes. This is the second full length album for Badlands, the first on Lost Sound Tapes, and is the follow up to the 2013 album “So Little”. The album title is quite appropriate as many of these songs are filled with layers that build up over time in addition to the lyrical content that explores social justice issues, resistance, introspection, and healing. The most powerful track on the album is "Work To Do” which touches on examples of racism present in our culture today, and shows how much work we still have to do, both privately and publicly, to dismantle it. On this album is also a Donna Summer cover, the song "I Feel Love", which acts as a radical mantra of self love and confidence.

Edition of 100 translucent blue cassette tapes with hand stamped labels and full color artwork. Comes with a digital download.

lyrics

The warning signs have always been there
So why are we surprised at all?
Too easily denied
Now can we finally wake the fuck up?
My perspective has always been privileged
I’m grateful to those who’ve taught me to listen
We can’t afford to not take any action
So get up, we got work to do
We’ve got work to do

I’m calling out racist “jokes”
Now some coworkers think I’m a bitch (oh well)
Challenging sexist comments
And they said I’m too sensitive
I’m not gonna stop cuz I’m not the one who’s wrong
That shit has been acceptable for way too long
Another thing for white men to whine about
There’s no doubt, we got work to do

We’ve got work to do
I met with local progressives
In my conservative town
I showed them a list I made
Ten things I’m gonna work on now
One of them said it made her sad
Her problem was with Black Lives Matter
But if “All Lives” really mattered
Tamir Rice, Freddie Gray, Eric Garner,
Trayvon Martin, Sandra Bland…
(Michael Brown, Alton Sterling,
Philando Castile, Bettie Jones,
Michael Noel, Miguel Espinal,
Clinton Allen, John Crawford,
Oscar Grant, Walter Scott,
Charleena Lyles…)
Would still be alive
Their murders cannot be justified!
We’ve got work to do

I moved here when I was 14
From a country with its own history
Of violence, oppression, genocide
And hundreds of years it’s been denied
The First Nations deserve to know
Where did all their daughters go?
4,000 missing and murdered girls.
Trudeau, you’ve got work to do
We’ve got work to do

You’re worn out, overwhelmed
But I know that you’re not giving up
What the fuck is wrong with people?
And why is power so corrupt?
I heard a history teacher on the radio
She said we’re making progress
But it’s going too slow
We gotta get stronger, gotta organize
Even when it’s hitting us on all sides
So I’ll be there beside you
When it’s time to fight
It’s NOW!
We’ve got work to do

“The time has come it seems to me to recognize
That the framework,
The framework, in which we operate
Weighs on us too heavily to be borne
And is about to kill us.
It is time to ask very hard questions
And take very rude positions
At no matter what price.”
