  • Slow Growth Cassette Tape (Lost Sound Tapes #95)
    Cassette + Digital Album

    From Lostsoundtapes.com:
“Slow Growth” is ten songs about growth, change, love, recovery and resilience. Tenney intends to use her layered vocals and instruments to create mysterious, haunting harmonies and soundscapes inspired by environmental and political landscapes. This is the second full length album for Badlands, the first on Lost Sound Tapes, and is the follow up to the 2013 album “So Little”. The album title is quite appropriate as many of these songs are filled with layers that build up over time in addition to the lyrical content that explores social justice issues, resistance, introspection, and healing. The most powerful track on the album is "Work To Do” which touches on examples of racism present in our culture today, and shows how much work we still have to do, both privately and publicly, to dismantle it. On this album is also a Donna Summer cover, the song "I Feel Love", which acts as a radical mantra of self love and confidence.

Edition of 100 translucent blue cassette tapes with hand stamped labels and full color artwork. Comes with a digital download.

Includes unlimited streaming of Slow Growth via the free Bandcamp app, plus high-quality download in MP3, FLAC and more.

Small Amount 04:09
Just a very small amount Sometimes that’s all you can get out Fear and doubt Will hold you down Just a very small amount Sometimes that much can help you out One thing at a time Got to keep asking why
2.
No Way 02:02
There’s no shame in being wrong As long as you learn Is there no way to know how to know it Until you fuck up ?
3.
Slow It Down 04:17
So many times I wanted to tell you things Like how I’ve been hurting Like how I’ve been crying But I slowed it down Wait ‘til I can see a little clearer Wait ‘til I can breathe a little better Gotta remember the bigger picture Slow it down (We grow so, so, slow…) I think, think I gotta heal I been trying all this time just to figure it out I think I, think I learned some real Bad habits with you in how I treated myself Still we grow… So many times I wanted to tell you I’d been crying Wanted to tell you I’ve been trying To climb out of this hole That I found myself in again But I slowed it down Now I can see a little clearer Now I can breathe a little better And I can walk away if I have to If anybody’s an asshole to me Slow it down, slow it down.
4.
Unlearned 03:17
It’s not one thing I figured out one day Can’t let them tell you how to use your own brain It’s taken time to get it all straight But why would I think I’d be all straight? Oh the things you don’t mean to learn What a year it’s been I’ve spent so many days Doubting myself and feeling crazy Realizing things one by one Feeling things a hundred by one Oh the things you don’t mean to learn Now we’re moving through in ways we never did foresee And I know I can only do what’s right for me But I didn’t want to hurt anybody I didn’t want to lose anybody Oh the things you don’t mean to learn Oh the things you try not to learn They are things that can be Unlearned

Work To Do 06:04
The warning signs have always been there So why are we surprised at all? Too easily denied Now can we finally wake the fuck up? My perspective has always been privileged I’m grateful to those who’ve taught me to listen We can’t afford to not take any action So get up, we got work to do We’ve got work to do I’m calling out racist “jokes” Now some coworkers think I’m a bitch (oh well) Challenging sexist comments And they said I’m too sensitive I’m not gonna stop cuz I’m not the one who’s wrong That shit has been acceptable for way too long Another thing for white men to whine about There’s no doubt, we got work to do We’ve got work to do I met with local progressives In my conservative town I showed them a list I made Ten things I’m gonna work on now One of them said it made her sad Her problem was with Black Lives Matter But if “All Lives” really mattered Tamir Rice, Freddie Gray, Eric Garner, Trayvon Martin, Sandra Bland… (Michael Brown, Alton Sterling, Philando Castile, Bettie Jones, Michael Noel, Miguel Espinal, Clinton Allen, John Crawford, Oscar Grant, Walter Scott, Charleena Lyles…) Would still be alive Their murders cannot be justified! We’ve got work to do I moved here when I was 14 From a country with its own history Of violence, oppression, genocide And hundreds of years it’s been denied The First Nations deserve to know Where did all their daughters go? 4,000 missing and murdered girls. Trudeau, you’ve got work to do We’ve got work to do You’re worn out, overwhelmed But I know that you’re not giving up What the fuck is wrong with people? And why is power so corrupt? I heard a history teacher on the radio She said we’re making progress But it’s going too slow We gotta get stronger, gotta organize Even when it’s hitting us on all sides So I’ll be there beside you When it’s time to fight It’s NOW! We’ve got work to do “The time has come it seems to me to recognize That the framework, The framework, in which we operate Weighs on us too heavily to be borne And is about to kill us. It is time to ask very hard questions And take very rude positions At no matter what price.” -James Baldwin, "The Artist’s Struggle for Integrity", 1963

Even Though 02:36
Even though you couldn’t see it I still loved you Even though the pain is real I know I made the right move Even though we never lied We couldn't see the truth Even though I still have bad days They’re fewer and few Even though the fear creeps up I’m learning better tools Even though it’s been rough I think I’m getting through Gonna be better soon Even though… Even though...

Can't 04:25
I know that I’ve been running It’s hard to face the things that exhaust me But know I have been trying To face the things that exhaust me Every small step feels like a leap Every small taste feels like a feast People got ideas about what I should be And I just can’t I don’t want to, I can’t Don’t need to, I can’t Don’t want to, I can’t Don’t know how I can I know that you’ve been trying Like I’ve been trying for so long It was easy to be silent I know it hasn’t helped anyone Every small step feels like a leap Every small taste feels like a feast People got ideas about what you should be And you just can’t You don’t want to, you can’t Don’t need to, you can’t Don’t want to, you can’t Don’t know how you can

I’m in LA, I’m in a car, it’s hot outside What else is new? What can you do? Get a new job But I gotta see you, I just gotta see you tonight Yeah I gotta see you, I just gotta see you tonight Now I'm not far, look at my phone...25 minutes away No I'm not far, look at my phone...45 minutes away! But I gotta see you, I just gotta see you tonight Yeah I gotta see you, I just gotta see you tonight I wonder why so many friends have moved so far away I wonder why I’m still here, I’m on the freeway Cuz I gotta see you, I just gotta see you tonight Yeah I gotta see you, I just gotta see you tonight And by the time, I’m there, it’s late Too tired to know what to do or even say So tired so next time I’ll take the Metro So tired so, next time I’ll take you with me
